Breast implant exchange sometimes called revision augmentation or changing of implants, replaces existing implants with new ones. Women choose it to change size or shape, to address problems such as rupture or capsular contracture, or simply because their original implants have been in place for many years.
Dr Chris Davis will assess both your implants and the surrounding tissue to recommend the approach most likely to give a lasting result.
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and typically takes around two hours. Existing implants are removed and replaced, usually through the original incision. Where necessary, the capsule of scar tissue is treated or removed at the same time.
Implant exchange is commonly considered by women whose implants have been in place for many years, who want a different size or shape, or who are experiencing hardening, discomfort or concerns about implant integrity.
As with any implant surgery, it is worth understanding that replacement implants are also not lifetime devices, and further procedures may be needed in the future.
At consultation Dr Davis will examine you, review your previous surgery and explain what can realistically be achieved with an exchange.
Most patients go home the same day. Because the implant pocket already exists, recovery is often more comfortable than the original augmentation, though swelling and tightness are still expected initially.
Most patients return to desk-based work within about a week, avoiding strenuous exercise for several weeks. New implants settle into position over the following months.
