Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat to improve body contour. It is used to treat areas that remain resistant to diet and exercise, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, flanks and arms.
Dr Chris Davis holds consultations at 84 Harley Street, London, and performs liposuction with a focus on smooth, proportionate contouring rather than simply removing volume.
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and typically takes around three hours. Fat is removed through small incisions using fine cannulas, with the areas treated agreed with you in advance.
Where it suits the patient, Dr Davis also offers advanced techniques. VASER liposuction is a form of ultrasound-assisted liposuction, using ultrasound energy to loosen fat before it is removed — this can allow more precise, refined contouring and is often gentler on the surrounding tissue. Where loose skin is a concern, Renuvion, a skin-tightening device that uses helium plasma and radiofrequency energy, can be used alongside liposuction to help tighten the skin. Whether either is appropriate depends on your anatomy and goals, and is discussed at consultation.
Liposuction is commonly considered by those close to a stable, healthy weight who have specific areas of fat that persist despite diet and exercise.
It is important to be clear that liposuction is a contouring procedure rather than a weight-loss treatment. On its own it does not tighten loose skin, though a skin-tightening device such as Renuvion can be added where some laxity is present. Where skin laxity is the main concern, however, a different procedure may give a better result.
At consultation Dr Davis will assess the areas concerned, your skin quality and overall health, and advise honestly whether liposuction is the right approach.
Most patients stay one night after surgery. Bruising, swelling and tenderness in the treated areas are expected in the first weeks, and a compression garment is worn to support healing and help the contour settle.
Most patients return to desk-based work within about a week. Swelling resolves gradually, with the final contour typically apparent after several months.

No. Liposuction is for body contouring, not weight loss. It targets stubborn fat areas resistant to diet and exercise.
This depends on your body and treatment area. Safety always comes first, and Dr Davis will advise on realistic, safe limits.
Removed fat cells do not return. However, remaining fat cells can enlarge if weight is gained.
Swelling typically improves over several weeks, with final results visible around 3–6 months.
